Two years in and the global chip shortage is still causing havoc all around the world, not just for tech business. Here is how it could affect your business.
So many of the daily items and appliances that we use contain a chip. Laptops and desktops etc are the items that often spring to mind. But also household appliances, even our cars. In fact, it is hard to find an electrical device without a chip.
This shortage in chips has the potential to disrupt our modern lives as we know them and has been an ongoing issue since 2020 (that year really was a gift, wasn’t it?)
It began during the pandemic as production levels fell as demand went up.
Other events since the pandemic have made it worse, including but not limited to the extreme weather, a factory fire, and the Ukraine war.
Increasing chip production isn’t as easy as it may sound. It can take years to build a new factory due to the unique production demands.
Of course, all of this is someone else’s problem. Let’s make it real to you – what does this actually mean for your business?
Essentially it means you need to plan ahead more. as some of the technology required to run your business may be in short supply.
As an example, getting large numbers of the same laptop might be difficult, compared to getting just 2 or 3. And some of the essential devices you rarely think about as they’re in the background, such as network switches, are currently much harder to get.
As you push your business towards increased growth it means planning ahead more than ever before.
Industry experts expect the shortage to last into next year… with talks of it being even longer.
